Short Pump features many different neighborhoods and communities. Some of its residences are fairly well established, built between 1970 and 1999.
A number of homes were also built between 2000 and present day. The area continues to expand west towards Goochland. There are many townhouse and condominium communities, but single-family homes are the predominant housing type in Short Pump. Most homes are colonial, traditional or transitional in style.
This area has a long history, an unusual name, and a bright future. Carroll Plumbing is privileged to serve Short Pump residents with their plumbing needs.
Historic Short Pump
Short Pump takes its name from a local tavern built by Revolutionary War veteran Robert Hyde Saunders in 1815. The tavern–one of only a few places to stay between Richmond and the Shenandoah Valley–became known for its short-handled water pump.
The original handle length couldn’t clear the area between the pump and the tavern’s front porch. Hence, its short handle. Saunders’ tavern became a landmark to travelers in the region, distinguishable by its unusual water pump.
Famous visitors to the area include Thomas Jefferson (who is believed to have stayed at the Short Pump tavern), as well as the Marquis de Lafayette and Lord Cornwallis.
According to a map belonging to the Virginia Historical Society, Henrico County named the crossroads that grew up around the tavern “Short Pump” in 1853.
Saunders eventually built Short Pump plantation nearby. The tavern lasted until it was demolished in the early 1930s to make room for the construction of a new road.
Today, Short Pump features homes of varying ages and styles. The age of a home and methods used during construction can affect how systems like HVAC and plumbing perform.
Carroll Plumbing & Heating Inc. is experienced in working with systems of all ages and types. Our services not only target system efficiency and performance, but the overall comfort and safety of the home.
